The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is preparing to launch a new e-Aadhaar app, which will allow users to update their identity details effortlessly. Expected to be released later this year, this innovative application will enable individuals to verify their identities and manage updates through their smartphones.
Transforming Identity Management
The e-Aadhaar app aims to revolutionize the way millions of Indians access and manage their Aadhaar information. Traditionally, users faced long wait times and logistical challenges when visiting authorized centers, particularly in regions with fewer facilities. With the introduction of this app, users will be able to update critical information such as their name, address, date of birth, and mobile number directly from their devices.
Bhuvnesh Kumar, the CEO of UIDAI, reported that over 2,000 of the existing one lakh Aadhaar authentication devices have already been upgraded to support the new QR code-based system. This significant enhancement is expected to streamline the verification process. Starting in November 2025, individuals will only need to visit enrollment centers for biometric updates, such as fingerprint or iris changes.
The e-Aadhaar app is designed to simplify the data update process by automatically retrieving previously verified information from government databases. This feature eliminates the need for users to manually upload documents for initial verification, making the process quicker and more efficient.
Supporting Document Integration
Users will be able to link various documents to facilitate updates. These include:
– Birth certificates
– PAN cards
– Passports
– Driving licenses
– Ration cards under the Public Distribution System (PDS)
– MNREGA scheme records
– Electricity bills for address verification
In addition, UIDAI is collaborating with educational boards, including the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), to implement biometric enrollment drives for students. This initiative aims to ensure that the Aadhaar details of students remain current during critical developmental stages, specifically between the ages of five and seven, and again from 15 to 17 years.
A biometric update will be mandatory for babies born in India before the age of seven, ensuring comprehensive coverage for the youngest citizens.
Enhanced Security Measures
In response to increasing concerns about cybersecurity, UIDAI plans to incorporate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and facial recognition into the e-Aadhaar system. The app will allow users to utilize facial recognition combined with passwords or one-time passwords (OTPs) to enhance security and reduce unauthorized access and identity theft.
The anticipated launch of the e-Aadhaar app is expected to provide a streamlined solution for updating Aadhaar information, benefiting both individuals and service providers. Users are encouraged to review the terms and conditions to fully understand the new processes involved.
This development marks a significant step forward in India’s digitization efforts, making identity management more accessible for citizens across the country.
