The Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs (GSE) has officially opened applications for its upcoming Summer Startup program aimed at high school students and the Collegiate Pitch competition for college entrepreneurs in Kentucky. Interested students can apply through the program’s website, kentuckygse.com, for these free initiatives designed to empower the next generation of innovators.
GSE will collaborate with the University of Kentucky’s Gatton College of Business and Economics for the Summer Startup program, which will take place from June 20 to July 12, 2026. High school students currently in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grades are encouraged to apply by 11 p.m. EST on January 16, 2026. Importantly, GSE does not factor in grade-point averages or standardized test scores during the application process.
During the immersive three-week program, students will reside on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington, participating in a rigorous curriculum designed to enhance entrepreneurial skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. Governor Andy Beshear expressed his enthusiasm for the program, stating, “The Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs is an incredible opportunity for Kentucky students, and we’re seeing real results as GSE alums produce new patents, businesses, and services following this great experience.”
In addition to the Summer Startup program, GSE will host its Collegiate Pitch competition on February 28, 2026, at SparkHaus in Covington, Kentucky. This event is noted as the largest intercollegiate pitch competition in the state, with participants eligible for funding awards ranging from $3,000 to $15,000. College students interested in competing must submit an Intent to Compete form by December 5, 2025.
The Collegiate Pitch aims to foster innovation by allowing students to develop and present their business ideas while gaining invaluable feedback from industry experts. “GSE and the state of Kentucky are proud to champion student entrepreneurs across the Bluegrass,” said Anne Jewell, president and CEO of GSE. “From high school through college and beyond, GSE is a steady source of support to help their ventures thrive in communities throughout the commonwealth.”
Since its inception in 2013, GSE has made significant strides in nurturing young talent. To date, 1,258 high school students have graduated from the Summer Startup program. The initiative has facilitated the launch of over 70 businesses in Kentucky, underscoring its impact on the local economy. Additionally, GSE graduates have access to millions of dollars in scholarships from various colleges and universities across the state.
The Collegiate Pitch has also had a substantial influence, with hundreds of student entrepreneurs participating from 19 colleges and representing over 50 Kentucky-based businesses since 2019. The program continues to enhance the entrepreneurial landscape in Kentucky, creating opportunities for students to succeed.
