When a young family moved from Los Angeles to Maplewood, New Jersey, they sought to maintain their California lifestyle rather than completely reinvent it. Their new residence on Hickory Drive, described by designer Hollie Velten-Lattrell of SPACES by Hollie Velten as “a magical street,” was charming and ready for immediate occupancy. However, the interior lacked the distinctive personality that had characterized their life in Southern California.
Hollie’s vision for the home was to create a space that resonated with happy memories while incorporating a fresh, modern touch. Drawing inspiration from the seasonal menu of the renowned restaurant Chez Panisse, she infused the design with a color palette that reflected the essence of California, featuring hues like poached leeks, earthy olive, summer fig, and persimmon peel. These shades were complemented by elements inspired by hotel lounges and coastal picnics, resulting in a nostalgic yet contemporary atmosphere.
Balancing Character and Modernity
The house’s original features, including a wide hall, ribbon-inlay floors, and crown moldings, guided Hollie’s design approach. Rather than making structural changes, she focused on enhancing the home’s existing character. “Our specialty is layering in personality while preserving what makes these homes feel singular and storied,” she explained. The transformation relied heavily on thoughtful choices in paint, pattern, and custom millwork, reshaping the scale and purpose of each room without altering its fundamental structure.
In the living room, previously empty spaces were filled with a cozy arrangement centered around a large custom ottoman, vintage leather chairs, and a striking paper ceiling light. Traditional window treatments were given a relaxed touch, creating an inviting environment. The aim was to create a space where the family could enjoy quiet evenings together, with their dog Josie often seen lounging in the window.
The dining room, reflecting the layered palette of Chez Panisse, was designed to accommodate both family gatherings and creative activities like homework and crafts. An ochre-painted accent ceiling added warmth, while the exposed ribbon inlay flooring showcased intricate details. “This home is meant to invite life,” Hollie stated, emphasizing the importance of creating a space that felt nurturing and welcoming.
Practicality Meets Aesthetic Appeal
The transformation extended to a front room that initially was intended as a music space. As the family’s needs evolved, it was converted into a functional mudroom, designed with practicality in mind. Beadboard walls were painted in a cohesive color, creating a sense of connection with the rest of the home. The room features a window seat, wall hooks, and curated textiles that enhance its utility while maintaining a stylish look.
In the smaller yet dramatic powder room, Hollie drew inspiration from coastal themes, incorporating elements of Hog Island oyster culture. The hand-printed wallpaper, depicting a seaside town, combined soft blue tones with a relaxed atmosphere. This approach encapsulates Hollie’s philosophy of design: even the smallest spaces can tell a story.
The family room, where relaxation was paramount, featured rich colors and a custom ottoman sturdy enough for family activities. The walls, painted in Farrow & Ball’s Treron, created a cozy retreat for both adults and children. A vintage Swedish lamp and playful throw pillows added character, making it a welcoming space for the entire family.
In contrast, the primary bedroom was designed as a serene sanctuary, evoking a boutique hotel feel. With calming tones and a layered aesthetic, it reflected Hollie’s commitment to creating spaces that are both luxurious and livable. She remarked, “It’s napable with a little whimsy,” highlighting the balance between elegance and comfort.
Ultimately, this home is a testament to the family’s journey and their desire to weave their California memories into a new chapter in New Jersey. Each element is carefully curated to foster connection, warmth, and nostalgia. Hollie’s design philosophy shines through as she creates a “happy loud” house—one that invites conversation and embraces the joyful chaos of family life.
As guests step through the front door, they are greeted by a space that feels welcoming, cozy, and cool. “It’s a house that holds you,” Hollie concludes, emphasizing the importance of designing a home that reflects the lives and stories of those who inhabit it.
