Houston Lutheran Academy has made a significant move in the world of high school basketball by appointing former NBA player Rafer Alston as the new head coach of its basketball program. Alston, an 11-year veteran of the NBA and a former guard for the Houston Rockets, steps into the role as the Pioneers aim to rebound from a challenging 6-16 season in 2024-2025, during which they were outscored by a total of 1,320 to 935.
The announcement was made via a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, by the LSA Athletics. The post stated, “LSA welcomes new Head Boys Basketball Coach Rafer Alston. Coach Alston is known for his tremendous playing career, including a five-year stint with the Houston Rockets. He is excited to take the reins of the LSA Boys Basketball program!”
Alston’s basketball journey began in Queens, New York, where he earned the nickname “Skip 2 My Lou” as a streetball legend. His rise to prominence started with the 1999 AND1 Mixtape Tour, which showcased his exceptional skills and garnered national attention. This exposure ultimately paved the way for his entry into the NBA, beginning with the Milwaukee Bucks from 1999 to 2002.
After a brief period with the Golden State Warriors, who released him in 2002, Alston signed with the Toronto Raptors for the 2003 season. During his time with the Raptors, he averaged nearly 21 minutes and 7.8 points per game. His NBA career continued to flourish with the Miami Heat, where he played alongside Dwyane Wade and contributed to the team’s success in the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2004.
In 2004, Alston returned to Toronto under a reported six-year, $26.3 million contract. Later, he was traded to the Houston Rockets, where he played until 2008. His career also included stints with the Orlando Magic and New Jersey Nets before he concluded his professional playing days with the Los Angeles D-Fenders in 2012. Over his NBA career, Alston averaged 10.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists, accumulating a total of 6,799 points, 1,891 rebounds, and 3,202 assists.
Currently, Alston is coaching the COOZ Elite 3, an AAU basketball program based in Houston that is part of the PRO16 League and affiliated with Puma. The team is scheduled to compete this weekend in Richmond, Virginia, facing various teams from across the country, including Rhode Island Elite and Louisiana Elite.
Alston’s transition into coaching at Houston Lutheran Academy represents a fresh chapter for a program in need of revitalization. With his extensive experience both on the court and in leadership roles, he is poised to make a meaningful impact on the Pioneers and their players. The upcoming season will be a crucial test for both Alston and the team, as they work together to achieve success and foster a competitive spirit within the program.
