One Dead, Three Injured in Circus Train Collision in Dickinson

A tragic accident occurred on July 9, 1908, when a collision between a switch engine and the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West Show train in Dickinson, North Dakota, resulted in the death of one performer and serious injuries to several others. The incident highlights significant safety oversights in the railroad yard.

Jack Grant, a performer in the Wild West show, succumbed to internal injuries at a local hospital shortly after the accident. He had suffered a crushed leg and foot. Grant was approximately 30 years old and reportedly hailed from New York.

Among the injured were Harry Nettinger, who sustained severe injuries including broken thighs and ribs. His condition is grave, with family in Philadelphia informed of his situation. Howard Compton, a cowboy in the show, suffered multiple internal injuries, and his prognosis is serious as well. Additional injuries were reported for Richard Piere, who injured his left hand and wrist during the crash.

The collision took place shortly after the show had concluded its performance and was preparing to depart for Bismarck. According to reports, the train was delayed arriving in Bismarck and was in the process of being assembled when the incident occurred.

Investigation Reveals Negligence

Preliminary investigations indicated that the wreck was due to the negligence of the switching crew, who failed to properly secure the track. The switch engine collided with the main train traveling at approximately 30 miles per hour, leading to the derailment of four cars, while seven sleeper cars remained on a different track.

In total, four circus employees suffered injuries that necessitated hospitalization. In addition to Grant, Nettinger, and Compton, George Hooker, another cowboy, sustained a severe ankle sprain. Most of the injured stayed in Dickinson for treatment, while the fate of the show hung in the balance.

Despite the delays caused by the crash, the Wild West show planned to continue its scheduled performance in Bismarck later that day. The incident raises concerns about the safety protocols surrounding railroad operations, particularly in busy yards where entertainment and transportation intersect.

The aftermath of this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers inherent in both the railroad and entertainment industries. As investigations continue, the focus will be on ensuring that such accidents do not occur in the future.
