Iran Intensifies Repression of Baha’is Amid Global Condemnation

Reports from the Bahá’í International Community (BIC) and Human Rights Watch (HRW) indicate a significant escalation in the repression of Baha’is in Iran. This state-sponsored crackdown is underscored by harsh prison sentences and widespread asset confiscations. Between June and November 2025, the organizations documented over 750 incidents involving arrests, home raids, and imprisonments targeting members of Iran’s largest non-Muslim religious minority.

The current wave of repression has notably resulted in the separation of mothers from their young children, reflecting a broader pattern of discrimination rooted in a 1991 government memorandum. For decades, Iranian authorities have systematically denied Baha’is access to higher education, government employment, and the right to assemble. The judiciary, acting on directives from the Iranian leadership, has utilized vague charges, such as “deviant” educational activities and “propaganda against the state,” to criminalize the Baha’i faith.

In response to these ongoing violations, the European Union imposed sanctions on segments of Iran’s judiciary in April 2025. These sanctions were a direct response to the human rights abuses faced by the Baha’is, marking a significant step in international condemnation.

Bahar Saba, senior Iran researcher at HRW, strongly condemned the actions of Iranian authorities, stating, “Iranian authorities are relentlessly persecuting Baha’is, depriving them of the most basic human rights in what amounts to ongoing crimes against humanity – solely because of their faith.” She emphasized that virtually every aspect of Baha’is’ lives in Iran is affected by these egregious violations.

Both BIC and HRW assert that Iranian judicial and security officials are responsible for widespread and systematic human rights violations, which contravene international law. Their condemnation is supported by Iran’s violations of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which the country has ratified, alongside the principles outlined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Despite international condemnation, the effectiveness of these measures remains limited. While EU sanctions and reports from the United Nations address the symptoms of this persecution, they do not dismantle the entrenched legal and ideological framework within Iran that fosters such abuses. Although the UN Human Rights Council has appointed a Special Rapporteur to monitor human rights in Iran, the Iranian government routinely dismisses such external scrutiny.

Looking ahead, the international community watches closely for further developments. The potential for additional coordinated sanctions or internal pressures leading to policy changes remains uncertain. The plight of the Baha’is serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for human rights within Iran, as well as the challenges faced by advocates working to address these abuses on a global scale.
