Governor Newsom Receives Pardon Application for Pismo’s Manager

Governor Gavin Newsom‘s office has received a pardon application for Psalm Behpoor, the manager of Fresno’s popular restaurant, Pismo’s. Behpoor has been detained at an ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) facility in Bakersfield for over 100 days. According to his friend, Kash Amin, the situation has become increasingly dire for Behpoor, who arrived in the United States from Iran at the age of three.

Behpoor’s legal troubles date back to when he was 18 years old, over two decades ago, when he served time for non-aggravated burglary. In June 2023, he received a call from ICE requesting an in-person interview. Following this meeting, Behpoor was detained approximately one hour later.

There has been no update on when he might be released from detention, leaving his friends and family concerned about his future. The pardon application aims to address his past conviction and pave the way for his release.

The case has drawn attention from local officials as well. Congressman Jim Costa has publicly called for answers from ICE regarding the rationale behind Behpoor’s detention. Costa’s involvement highlights the growing scrutiny of immigration enforcement practices, particularly concerning long-term residents who have made significant contributions to their communities.

As the situation develops, supporters of Behpoor hope that the pardon application will lead to a resolution that allows him to return to his life and work at Pismo’s. The restaurant remains a beloved establishment in Fresno, known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse menu.

The community continues to rally around Behpoor, emphasizing the need for compassion in immigration enforcement and a reconsideration of policies that impact individuals who have lived in the United States for much of their lives. As the legal process unfolds, many are watching closely to see what decision Governor Newsom will make regarding the pardon application and Behpoor’s future.
