Authorities in Tennessee made a significant discovery during the arrest of a man suspected of threatening public officials. On March 15, 2024, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office announced that they found 14 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the home of Kevin Wade O’Neal, 54, while apprehending him on active warrants.
The operation began when deputies and detectives arrived at O’Neal’s residence to execute the arrest linked to accusations of threatening to kill law enforcement personnel and other public officials. During the arrest, deputies noticed a smoldering object in a bedroom, which was later identified as an IED, prompting a comprehensive search of the premises.
Following the alarming discovery, bomb squad officers and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were deployed to assist in the investigation. They subsequently uncovered a total of 14 IEDs within the property. Authorities indicated that O’Neal had allegedly planned to detonate these devices as law enforcement approached to arrest him.
O’Neal now faces multiple serious charges, including 11 counts of attempted first-degree murder, 14 counts related to prohibited weapons, and one count of possession of explosive components. The attempted murder charges are associated with the responding personnel from the sheriff’s office as well as two individuals present at the scene.
As of now, O’Neal is being held at Polk County Jail, with his bond status yet to be determined. It remains unclear whether he has secured legal representation for the forthcoming legal proceedings.
The situation underscores significant public safety concerns and highlights the risks associated with such threats. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has not only taken steps to ensure the immediate safety of the community but also continues to investigate the extent of O’Neal’s activities leading up to the arrest.
