Pakistan Rejects Claims of Deadly Airstrikes in Afghanistan

The Taliban government of Afghanistan has accused Pakistan of conducting airstrikes in three eastern provinces, resulting in the deaths of ten individuals, predominantly children. This claim, made on October 31, 2023, has been firmly rejected by Pakistan’s military, which stated that no such strikes took place.

According to Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesperson for the Afghan government, the alleged airstrikes targeted a civilian home in Khost Province, killing nine children and one woman. Mujahid also noted that additional strikes were reported in the provinces of Kunar and Paktika, injuring four others. He condemned these actions as “atrocities” and insisted that Afghanistan reserves the right to respond to such violations of its territory.

Tensions Escalate Amid Ongoing Clashes

This incident follows a recent surge in tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, particularly after previous cross-border clashes erupted in September. The Afghan government had reported that Pakistani drone strikes targeted Kabul, exacerbating an already strained relationship. In response to Mujahid’s accusations, Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry, a spokesperson for the Pakistani military, reaffirmed that Pakistan does not target civilians and denied any involvement in the recent strikes.

Chaudhry emphasized that any strikes conducted by Pakistan in October were aimed at militants from the Pakistani Taliban, who have been responsible for increasing violence within the country. “We announce and acknowledge whenever we carry out such strikes,” he stated during a news briefing in Rawalpindi.

Despite the rising tensions, a ceasefire brokered by Qatar and Turkey remains in effect. There has been no immediate comment from these mediating nations regarding the latest claims. Iran has also expressed a willingness to assist in reducing tensions between the two countries, with Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, indicating discussions with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

Meanwhile, in Khost, local residents are grappling with the aftermath of the alleged airstrikes. Survivors sifted through the rubble of a destroyed home, with one resident, Muhammad Iqbal, lamenting the loss of his cousin’s family. “You see the cruelty with your own eyes, that young children, a woman and nine children, were martyred,” he stated.

Recent Violence and Ongoing Operations

The situation has intensified following a violent attack in Peshawar, Pakistan, on October 30, 2023, where two suicide bombers and a gunman targeted the headquarters of the Federal Constabulary, killing three officers and injuring eleven others. Although no group has claimed responsibility, suspicion has fallen on the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a militant organization that maintains close ties with the Afghan Taliban.

Chaudhry revealed that the three attackers were Afghan nationals who had crossed into Pakistan from the Tirah border region. The TTP, while distinct from the Afghan Taliban, has been linked to various attacks within Pakistan and is believed to have many of its leaders operating from Afghanistan.

In recent months, Pakistan has ramped up operations against militants, claiming to have killed 1,873 militants since January 2023. During a recent raid in Bannu, located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, security forces killed 22 militants, whom they alleged were “Indian-backed.” The term “Khawarij” is used by the Pakistani military to describe militants they claim are supported by foreign entities, a statement that has been denied by both Kabul and New Delhi.

Despite escalated military efforts, the relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan remains fraught. Pakistan has repeatedly urged the Taliban government to take action against TTP militants operating from Afghan soil. However, Afghanistan has consistently denied these accusations, insisting that it does not allow any groups to use its territory for attacks against neighboring countries.

Bilateral trade has also suffered as a result of these tensions, leading to border crossings remaining shut since early October. This has restricted movement for residents seeking to visit family and friends across the border, further complicating an already delicate situation.

The ongoing conflict and claims of violence highlight the fragile state of relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan, with both nations facing significant internal and external challenges as they navigate the complexities of their shared border and security concerns.
