Nepal’s Protests Erupt Over Social Media Ban, Exposing Corruption

Public protests in Nepal have intensified following the government’s violent response to a ban on popular social media platforms. The unrest, which resulted in the deaths of at least 19 protesters on March 4, 2024, has led to the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and highlighted widespread discontent regarding corruption and nepotism within the political system.

The protests, primarily driven by teenagers and young adults, erupted in response to a social media ban that was enacted last week. The government’s move was seen as an effort to control online expression through pending legislation that mandates social media platforms to register with local authorities. This draft bill has faced significant backlash, with critics labeling it a tool for censorship and a violation of fundamental rights. According to rights groups, the legislation seeks to stifle free speech and punish those who express dissent online.

“Protests over the social media ban were just a catalyst. Frustrations over how the country is being run have long been simmering under the surface,” said Prateek Pradhan, editor of the independent news site Baahrakhari. “People are very angry, and Nepal finds itself in a very precarious situation.”

Concerns about corruption have been amplified by a social media campaign, particularly on TikTok, that has exposed the opulent lifestyles of politicians’ children. In a nation where the per capita income is just $1,400 annually, the stark contrast between wealth and poverty has fueled public anger. Youth unemployment in Nepal stood at 20% last year, according to the World Bank, further exacerbating frustrations among the younger population.

Escalating Unrest and Historical Context

The violence seen in recent days marks the worst civil unrest in Nepal in decades. Comparatively, the current situation is far more intense than the 2006 uprising, which forced the former king to relinquish his authoritarian power. That movement ultimately led to the abolition of the monarchy, yet many Nepalis now express dissatisfaction with the republic, citing its failure to achieve political stability.

Earlier in March, two individuals were killed during clashes between supporters of Nepal’s former monarchy and police in Kathmandu. Following Prime Minister Oli’s resignation, uncertainty remains regarding the future of governance in the country. Many protesters are calling for the dissolution of the current government, a move that could plunge Nepal into deeper instability, given that the nation has experienced 13 different governments since 2008.

According to Ashish Pradhan, a senior adviser with the International Crisis Group, “A transitional arrangement will now need to be charted out swiftly and include figures who still retain credibility with Nepalis, especially the country’s youth.”

Demands for Change and the Role of Youth

The violent actions taken by security forces have only intensified the protests, which have now spread to various regions, including the suburbs of Kathmandu. Protester Nima Tendi Sherpa, 19, described being shot in the arm during the turmoil. He noted that the protests began peacefully but escalated when police fired at demonstrators attempting to breach barricades.

“I don’t have any harsh feelings toward the policemen,” Sherpa stated. “They were just doing their duty by following orders. But I am angry and enraged at the ones who gave those orders. Now that the fire has already started, I believe it must continue until we achieve true freedom.”

The current wave of protests appears to be aligned with the youth-led movements in neighboring countries like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, which have seen significant governmental shifts. Pradhan observed, “It appears people are just done with how things have been going on. They want a change.”

As Nepal grapples with this period of unrest and demands for accountability, the future remains uncertain, with the potential for significant political transformation hanging in the balance.
