A man has been charged after he rammed his car into an FBI security gate in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 6, 2024. The incident occurred when Donald Phillip Henson, 46, allegedly crashed a white sedan covered in an American flag into the gate, claiming he intended to “make a statement.” Henson fled the scene but was apprehended seven hours later.
According to an affidavit from the FBI, Henson invoked the Latin phrase “sic semper tyrannis,” which translates to “thus always to tyrants,” during his conversation with agents. This phrase is historically associated with John Wilkes Booth, who reportedly shouted it after assassinating President Abraham Lincoln.
Charges and Investigation Details
Henson faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and damaging government property. Following his arrest, he was taken into custody and is set for a detention hearing on Tuesday. Christopher Giordano, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI in Pittsburgh, described the incident as a targeted attack on the FBI field office. Fortunately, no personnel were injured during the crash.
Details surrounding Henson’s motives remain unclear. Giordano noted that the FBI was already familiar with Henson, who is reported to have a military background. Public records indicate that he is a registered Republican who participated in the 2024 general election.
The FBI had previously encountered Henson when he visited the field office weeks prior to the incident, although his complaint was described as vague and unclear. Giordano mentioned that the vehicle had a message on one of its side windows, but specifics were not provided. It was also noted that the car bore a sticker from the U.S. Air Force.
Financial Background and Arrest Circumstances
In a bankruptcy filing from the previous year, Henson disclosed having approximately $380,000 in student loan debt alongside minimal assets and a shuttered business named Insomnia Solutions. His reported monthly income was just $281.
During the incident, the security officer on duty observed Henson’s vehicle approaching and initially suspected he was experiencing a medical emergency. The officer planned to leave the booth to investigate but opted to remain inside when Henson returned to his car to retrieve the flag, fearing he might be arming himself.
Investigators, including a bomb squad, examined the vehicle after the crash and determined that no explosives were present. Authorities continue to gather information regarding Henson’s motives and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about security and threats to federal facilities, as the FBI works to understand the factors that led to this attack.
