Lockheed Martin is set to enhance its research initiatives in the Philippines by establishing a state-of-the-art research laboratory aimed at advancing systems and prototypes across multiple industries. This initiative marks a significant step in the company’s collaboration with the Philippine government and Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Texas.
The new laboratory will focus on fostering innovation among Filipino professionals, enabling them to create cutting-edge solutions and prototypes. This effort is part of a broader strategy to deepen technical ties and enhance the Philippines’ capabilities in various sectors. With a comprehensive approach that includes business incubation funding, government initiatives, and academic programmes, Lockheed Martin aims to significantly impact the local economy.
Collaborative Efforts to Drive Innovation
The partnership with SMU will leverage the university’s Centre for Digital and Human-Augmented Manufacturing and the Deason Innovation Gym to provide research and development expertise. This will encompass areas such as digital modelling, simulation, virtual and augmented reality, robotics, automation, and artificial intelligence.
Dr. Ben Zoghi, Dean for Advanced Studies and Industry Partnerships at SMU, emphasized that these projects are poised to “significantly boost the Philippines’ academia and industry.” He noted that the initiatives will deliver “digital innovation technologies” that enhance the nation’s competitiveness in the global industrial landscape.
Lockheed Martin’s director of business development, Jess Koloini, indicated that the Philippines programme is not only about elevating the nation’s defence capabilities. It also aligns with the company’s wider goals of developing new capabilities and intellectual property through strategic partnerships.
Access to Advanced Resources and Tools
In addition to establishing the research laboratory, the collaboration seeks to provide Filipino institutions access to advanced tools and equipment available at SMU. This includes potential partnerships with local universities and companies, fostering a network that encourages knowledge transfer and innovation.
The establishment of this laboratory reflects Lockheed Martin’s commitment to investing in the Philippines and enhancing its technological prowess. By combining resources and expertise from both the United States and the Philippines, the initiative is expected to yield significant advancements in various sectors, ultimately contributing to economic growth and a stronger industrial base in the region.
This strategic move by Lockheed Martin illustrates the importance of international collaboration in driving technological advancements and economic development, positioning the Philippines as a key player in the global industrial sector.
