Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss has launched her first YouTube show, aiming to expose what she describes as an “international network of leftists” undermining democracy in the UK, the US, and Europe. During the inaugural episode, Truss expressed her intent to draw inspiration from the Trump revolution and engage with key figures in the MAGA movement. In her bleak introduction, she promised to unmask those she believes are conspiring against the will of the people.
Truss’s show, titled the Liz Truss Show, has already garnered attention, amassing 10,000 subscribers and 67,000 views within its first week. Her collaboration with John Solomon, a controversial journalist and founder of the conservative platform Just the News, has thrust her into a well-established conservative media ecosystem that actively promotes MAGA narratives. Solomon expressed enthusiasm about Truss’s venture, calling it the start of a “revolution.”
The show’s production quality is basic, but its significance lies in Truss’s strategic alignment with Solomon, who has faced scrutiny for his reporting on political matters, including allegations related to the Biden administration and Ukraine. His previous claims, which have been criticized for lack of reliability, found a receptive audience within pro-Trump circles, including appearances on influential platforms like Fox News.
Truss’s choice to connect with Solomon places her closer to figures who have been pivotal in shaping conservative discourse in the US. Solomon’s media presence has included discussions on Real America’s Voice, a cable channel that features prominent MAGA influencers such as Steve Bannon and Tucker Carlson. Truss has already interviewed Bannon for her podcast, signalling her commitment to integrating into this American conservative landscape.
While Truss’s political history has drawn ridicule in Britain, observers in the US are taking her efforts seriously. Rob Flaherty, a former campaign manager for Vice President Kamala Harris, noted that the conditions enabling the MAGA media ecosystem in the US could similarly influence the UK. The rising online conservative movement is recognized as having significant potential to impact British political discourse.
As Truss seeks to broaden her appeal, she has incorporated references aimed at resonating with an American audience. In one segment, she remarked, “We’re now poorer than Mississippi,” drawing a comparison that may not resonate with her primary UK audience. This attempt to connect suggests a deliberate strategy to engage with conservative sentiments across the Atlantic.
The Informing America Foundation (IAF), a lesser-known nonprofit that funds conservative media, has been linked to Solomon and his initiatives. Solomon has claimed that IAF reaches over 120 million Americans monthly, although whether it has directly supported Truss’s show remains unclear, as both IAF and Just the News did not respond to inquiries.
Truss’s strategic positioning has been described as a “media marriage of convenience.” While she potentially gains from the credibility and reach of Solomon’s network, he benefits from her stature as a former prime minister, which adds a level of prestige to his platform. Political strategist Joseph Robertson, who advises Truss, has echoed sentiments critical of the government’s digital ID policy, aligning closely with MAGA’s anti-establishment rhetoric.
Critics have raised concerns about Truss’s aptitude for this medium. Craig Oliver, a former communications chief for David Cameron, suggested that charisma is essential for success in media, a quality Truss may lack. Nonetheless, Flaherty cautioned against underestimating her potential to resonate with the MAGA base, noting that the alternative media ecosystem is known for its capacity for rebranding and redemption.
As Truss navigates this new chapter in her political career, her alignment with the MAGA movement marks a significant shift in her approach. The implications of her venture extend beyond personal reinvention, potentially reshaping the landscape of conservative politics in the UK as it increasingly interacts with American influences.
