Jonathan Owens, husband of Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, reported a narrow escape from a robbery while shopping in Milan on February 18, 2024, during the Winter Olympics. The incident occurred as Owens, a safety for the Chicago Bears, was out shopping when he encountered a would-be thief attempting to snatch his shopping bag.
Describing the experience as “crazy,” Owens recounted the moment on social media platform X, stating, “Not somebody just tried to snatch my shopping bag in Milan, force of habit I had it tied around my hand so he couldn’t get it and took off running immediately.” His quick thinking prevented the theft, showcasing his awareness of the potential for crime in the bustling city hosting the Winter Games.
Owens, 30, revealed that he had taken precautions after viewing several TikTok videos about pickpocketing in Milan. “Should’ve seen his face once he realized I turned around and he couldn’t grab it,” he added, highlighting the comedic side of a tense situation. A fan inquired whether he considered pursuing the thief, to which Owens humorously responded that the suspect was “not fast at all.” He noted, “Honestly bro it was hilarious how slow he started running away once he saw he couldn’t grab it out of my hand.”
While it was unclear if Biles was present at the time of the incident, she had shared a photo earlier that day of the couple shopping together at a Bottega Veneta store, captioned, “Always spoiling me,” showcasing a lighter moment from their Olympic experience.
The couple, who married in 2023, has been seen enjoying various Olympic events together, including the men’s figure skating final and the speed skating competition on Valentine’s Day. Their presence at the Games has drawn attention, not only for their athletic achievements but also for their engaging relationship.
As the Winter Olympics continue, Owens’ encounter serves as a reminder of the unexpected challenges that can arise even in the midst of celebration and competition.
