Israeli fighter jets were deployed to escort a commercial flight to safety on March 10, 2024, after a false alarm involving a perceived terrorist threat onboard. The incident occurred on Wizz Air Flight W95301, which was traveling from London to Tel Aviv. Panic ensued when a passenger discovered a threatening message associated with a Wi-Fi hotspot labeled with the Arabic word for “terrorist.”
According to the Times of Israel, the alarming message prompted security forces to take immediate action, dispatching Israeli Air Force jets to accompany the aircraft as it approached Ben Gurion International Airport. Upon landing, officials conducted thorough inspections of the plane and its passengers.
An official from the Israel Airports Authority confirmed to the Times of Israel that “the aircraft landed, and it was found that there was no real incident.” Investigations revealed that the unsettling message had been created by the child of an ultra-Orthodox couple, who had mistakenly changed the name of their phone’s hotspot.
As another passenger attempted to connect to the plane’s Wi-Fi, they noticed the alarming name and immediately alerted the flight crew. Due to security protocols, the aircraft circled the Mediterranean Sea several times before being cleared to land at Ben Gurion. During this time, the airport temporarily paused all incoming and outgoing flights as a precautionary measure.
The Israel Airports Authority subsequently lifted the heightened security measures, stating that the incident was under investigation. This event echoes a similar situation from the previous month, when a Turkish Airlines flight heading to Istanbul was forced to make an emergency landing after passengers discovered a Wi-Fi hotspot named “bomb on board.”
The quick response by security forces highlights the ongoing vigilance in aviation security, particularly in light of potential threats, whether real or imagined. As investigations continue, authorities are working to ensure that such incidents are addressed promptly and effectively to maintain safety in air travel.
