Three individuals, including two police officers, died in an explosion in Moscow on Wednesday, according to Russian authorities. The incident occurred in close proximity to where a car bomb killed high-ranking officer Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov just days earlier.
The two traffic police officers were responding to a “suspicious individual” when an explosive device detonated. Svetlana Petrenko, a spokesperson for the Investigative Committee, confirmed that the officers, along with a civilian nearby, succumbed to their injuries. Forensic experts and investigators were promptly deployed to the scene to gather evidence.
The explosion took place in the same area where Lt. Gen. Sarvarov, who led the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, was killed by a car bomb on March 11, 2024. The explosive device detonated under his vehicle in southern Moscow, marking a significant escalation in violence against military figures in the region. Authorities suspect that Ukraine may have orchestrated this attack, which represents the third assassination of a senior Russian military officer within a year.
In December 2024, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, the head of the military’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces, was killed when a bomb concealed on an electric scooter detonated outside his apartment building. His assistant also perished in the incident. Ukraine’s security service claimed responsibility for that attack, leading to the arrest of an Uzbek man charged with the killing.
In April 2024, another senior military officer, Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik, met a similar fate when an explosive device was placed in his car parked near his apartment. A suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter.
Since Russia commenced military operations in Ukraine nearly four years ago, Russian authorities have implicated Ukraine in several high-profile assassinations of military officers and public figures within Russia. While Ukraine has acknowledged responsibility for some incidents, the ongoing conflict has heightened tensions and violence in the region.
As investigations continue into the recent explosion, the implications for both Russian and Ukrainian relations remain profound. The frequency of such targeted attacks raises concerns about security and stability in the capital and beyond.
