A couple from Ilminster, Somerset, aims to set a remarkable record by walking the entire coastline of mainland Great Britain over the next two years. Mike Langley, aged 73, hopes to become the oldest individual to complete this ambitious journey, covering an estimated 7,000 miles (11,265 kilometers). He will be joined by Zoe Langley-Wathen, 54, as they strive to raise £10,000 for the Dorset and Somerset Ambulance (DSAA).
Their journey is set to kick off in October 2023 at South Haven Point, Studland, from where they will proceed in an anti-clockwise direction around the British coast, ultimately returning to their starting point. Mr. Langley expressed his determination, stating, “I know this won’t be easy, but I’m determined to prove that age doesn’t have to hold you back.” Ms. Langley-Wathen shared her motivation, saying, “Long-distance walking has changed my life, and I want to encourage others – especially women in midlife – to see what they’re capable of.”
Fundraising for a Vital Cause
The couple’s decision to raise funds for DSAA stems from their recognition of its critical role in rural communities. Mrs. Langley-Wathen stated, “What really struck us during a recent visit to the airbase was the speed at which the crew can bring the hospital to the patient.” She noted the service’s reliance on donations, emphasizing their desire to raise awareness and funds to support ongoing operations.
The DSAA is the busiest air ambulance service in the South West, responding to nearly 3,000 missions each year. The cost for each deployment is approximately £3,500, meaning their fundraising target would support nearly three potentially life-saving missions. Charlotte Humber, Supporter Engagement Officer for the DSAA, praised the couple’s efforts, stating, “Their dedication, time, and energy are not only helping to fund vital missions, but also inspiring others to get behind our cause.”
Impact of Additional Resources
The DSAA has recently launched an appeal to raise the final £1 million necessary to purchase and equip a second air ambulance helicopter. Humber noted, “A second helicopter will enable our air ambulance crew to reach more patients, strengthen operational resilience and ultimately save even more lives.”
