Young Singaporean Surfer Discovers Community Through Adventure

URGENT UPDATE: In a remarkable journey, Chloe Lee has transformed her life through surfing, discovering a vibrant community and newfound confidence. The 22-year-old financial advisor from Singapore began her surfing adventure in 2023 and has since made multiple trips to a surf camp in Bali, Indonesia, where she has forged lasting connections.

Lee’s story highlights a growing trend among young people seeking adventure sports to escape the fast-paced city life. After feeling burned out from her job at JPMorgan, she embarked on her first solo trip in 2024 to Bali, driven by the desire to improve her surfing skills and meet new people. “I picked Bali again because it was close to home, and I wanted to find a place that fostered community,” she shared.

The shift in mindset among Gen Z is evident, with many now prioritizing experiences over material possessions. “Trips can be expensive, but social media influences us to seek unique adventures that our parents might not have dared to try,” Lee explained. This cultural change is propelling more young adults to invest their earnings in personal growth and exploration.

Lee has returned to the surf camp four times, drawn back by the skilled instructors and the camp’s welcoming atmosphere. “I know that even if I come by myself, I will have a good time with other people,” she said. This sense of belonging is crucial, especially as surfing remains an uncommon sport in Singapore. Lee has even formed a close-knit group with fellow surfers, enabling her to share her passion and stay connected through a dedicated group chat.

The emotional and physical benefits of surfing are profound. Lee describes her surf trips as more than just vacations; they are transformative experiences. “I’m fully immersed when I’m in the water — I’m not thinking about work or anything back home,” she stated. The thrill of catching waves, paired with the camaraderie of fellow surfers, has instilled in her a sense of accomplishment and pride.

Beyond the waves, Lee has embraced yoga to enhance her flexibility and mobility, recognizing the importance of physical fitness in her surfing journey. “It’s forced me to watch my health more,” she noted, reflecting on the overall lifestyle changes she has embraced since taking up the sport.

As she prepares for her next adventure, Lee emphasizes the personal growth she has experienced through surfing. “It has taught me patience and confidence,” she said, adding that these lessons have reverberated into her professional life. “I’ve learned that I can do hard things and enjoy being uncomfortable,” she explained.

Lee’s story is part of a broader narrative about the impact of adventure sports on young adults today. As they seek community and self-discovery, surfing serves as a powerful vehicle for connection and personal development. With plans to try snowboarding next, Chloe Lee exemplifies how embracing new challenges can lead to lasting friendships and a more fulfilling life.

As interest in adventure sports continues to surge, Chloe Lee’s journey underscores the importance of community, resilience, and the transformative power of pursuing one’s passions.
