Young Oklahoman Aims for $20K Prize in Junior Ranger Competition

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. — In a bid to enhance his community service efforts, 12-year-old Cannon Deeter from Midwest City is competing in the Ranger Rick Magazine’s Junior Ranger Competition. Deeter, who dedicates his summers to mowing lawns for those unable to do so themselves, hopes to win the $20,000 grand prize to expand his charitable work.

“It’s better to be outside than inside,” said Deeter, who has spent the past three summers cutting hundreds of lawns. Some of these lawns are part of his lawn care business, while others are mowed free of charge for the disabled, veterans, and the elderly through the Raising Men Lawncare Service.

Community Service with a Purpose

Deeter’s commitment to helping those in need has not gone unnoticed. He has been recognized by the Mayor of Midwest City for his efforts. “Either they can’t do it if they’re old or disabled. Or they don’t have the money or the time,” explained Deeter, illustrating the challenges faced by many in his community.

The young philanthropist describes his lawn-mowing tasks with a sense of dedication. “If [the lawns are] easy, it’ll be like 30-45 minutes, but if they’re like really long, it’s like an hour and a half to an hour,” he said.

Passion for the Outdoors

When not mowing lawns, Deeter enjoys spending time in nature. “I like going camping, hiking, fishing, kayaking, and anything outdoors,” he shared. Deeter finds peace in the natural world, stating that he sleeps best while camping, where he can “smell the earth and listen to the sounds.”

This love for the outdoors inspired him to enter the Ranger Rick’s Jr. Ranger Competition. The contest offers the winner a chance to be featured on the magazine’s cover and meet Jeff Corwin, a renowned Animal Planet personality.

The Road to Victory

Voting for the quarter-finals concludes on Thursday, July 10th, after which successful candidates will advance to the semi-finals. Deeter is determined to win the grand prize of $20,000, which he plans to invest in his community service projects.

“I’ll get a riding mower so I can help more people with the longer and bigger yards,” Deeter said. “I’m going to buy an enclosed trailer for my lawn care business.” His vision is to further assist his community, “one blade of grass at a time.”

Implications and Future Prospects

Deeter’s story is a testament to the impact of youth-led community service initiatives. His participation in the competition highlights the potential for young individuals to contribute meaningfully to society. The $20,000 prize would not only enhance his ability to serve but also inspire others to engage in similar acts of kindness.

As the competition progresses, Deeter’s journey serves as a reminder of the power of dedication and the importance of supporting local heroes. Whether or not he secures the grand prize, his efforts have already made a significant difference in the lives of many Midwest City residents.

The community eagerly awaits the results of the competition, hopeful that Deeter’s hard work and passion for service will be recognized on a national platform.
