Yankees Intensify Pursuit of Cody Bellinger Amid Free Agency

UPDATE: The New York Yankees have confirmed their strong interest in re-signing outfielder Cody Bellinger as free agency approaches. General manager Brian Cashman expressed this desire during a video call from the annual general manager meetings in Las Vegas, stating, “We’re very interested in bringing him back.”

This announcement comes as teams are strategizing for the offseason, with Bellinger expected to be one of the most sought-after free agents after a standout 2025 season. While he may not command the record-breaking contract of fellow outfielder Juan Soto, predictions suggest Bellinger could secure a lucrative deal worth approximately $165 million over six years.

Bellinger’s performance with the Yankees was exceptional; he played 152 games, hitting .272 with 29 home runs and an impressive .813 OPS. His prowess against left-handed pitchers was particularly notable, leading left-handed hitters in both on-base percentage (.415) and slugging percentage (.601) against them.

Defensively, Bellinger proved to be a valuable asset, excelling in corner outfield positions while also contributing at first base. His overall performance contributed to a 4.9 fWAR, ranking him second on the Yankees only to Aaron Judge.

After his successful season in the Bronx, Bellinger opted out of the final year of his previous three-year, $80 million deal with the Chicago Cubs. His former agent, Scott Boras, highlighted the fit between Bellinger and the Yankees as “an ideal fit,” emphasizing the team’s supportive environment.

However, Bellinger is not the only outfielder the Yankees are monitoring. Trent Grisham, who had a breakout 2025 with a career-high 34 home runs, faces a decision by November 18 to either accept a one-year qualifying offer of $22.025 million or enter free agency. Cashman indicated that pursuing Bellinger will not be hindered by Grisham’s choice, and the Yankees may target both players.

As the offseason unfolds, the Yankees are eager to solidify their roster after a 94-win season that ended abruptly with a postseason exit against the Toronto Blue Jays. The focus now is clear: securing Bellinger is a top priority for New York, as Cashman stated, “We’d be better served if we could retain him.” With the free agent market heating up, fans and analysts alike are watching closely to see how this situation develops.

The Yankees’ pursuit of Bellinger marks a critical moment in their offseason strategy, promising to shape the team’s future as they aim to reclaim their status as contenders in the American League East.
