xAI Cuts 500 Jobs in Major Shift to Specialist AI Tutors

URGENT UPDATE: Elon Musk’s xAI has just announced significant layoffs affecting 500 workers from its data annotation team, marking a dramatic shift in strategy toward prioritizing specialist AI tutors. This move, confirmed late Friday night, reduces the team by nearly a third, as the company pivots to focus on specific domains over generalist roles.

The layoffs, revealed through internal emails seen by Business Insider, indicate a sharp change in direction for xAI, with plans to enhance its team of specialist AI tutors by a staggering 10X. The announcement comes as xAI aims to refine its AI chatbot, Grok, by employing tutors with domain-specific expertise in areas such as STEM, finance, and medicine.

Workers received notice that their employment would end immediately but would be compensated through the end of their contracts or until November 30. Access to company systems was cut off the same day, leaving many employees in shock. Affected workers expressed frustration over the abruptness of the decision, with one stating, “Doing this after people have gone home for the day is pretty shady.”

As part of the reorganization, xAI conducted tests to evaluate employees’ strengths and align them with future roles. These assessments were described as a way to identify the most suitable candidates for specialist positions. The company instructed employees to complete these tests by the morning of September 13, 2025, creating a tense atmosphere as they scrambled to meet deadlines.

The data annotation team is critical to Grok’s development, responsible for teaching the chatbot to understand complex data. Before the layoffs, the team boasted over 1,500 members, a number that has rapidly decreased as the layoffs were announced. The main Slack channel for annotators has already seen membership drop to around 1,000, with more resignations expected in the coming days.

In a post on X, xAI indicated its commitment to expanding the specialist team, stating, “We are hiring across domains like STEM, finance, medicine, safety, and many more.” This bold claim highlights the urgency and scale of the changes underway at the company.

The layoffs come on the heels of a series of senior-level departures, raising questions about the management’s direction and the future of the company. Recent reports indicated that former team leaders had their Slack accounts deactivated just days before the layoffs, suggesting potential internal turmoil.

As the dust settles from these layoffs, xAI’s future remains uncertain. The company is now tasked with rapidly recruiting specialists while managing the fallout from its recent decisions. For employees, the immediate impact is profound, as many are left to navigate a sudden loss of employment in a rapidly changing tech landscape.

NEXT STEPS: Watch for updates on xAI’s hiring process and the ongoing impact on the tech industry as companies reassess their workforce strategies in response to market demands. Further developments are expected as xAI articulates its vision for the future of AI tutoring and the roles of its remaining staff.
