BREAKING: Walker Buehler has officially signed with the San Diego Padres, marking a significant shift after spending eight seasons with their archrivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Just announced this morning in Peoria, Arizona, Buehler has inked a minor league deal that includes an invitation to big league camp.
Buehler, now 31 years old, expressed mixed emotions stepping into the Padres’ clubhouse. “Yeah, it feels a little weird,” he stated, donning the team’s brown and gold uniform. “This is a crazy game, and this is a great opportunity for me.” The right-hander aims to secure a spot in the rotation, emphasizing his intent to “come in and try and make the team and contribute in any way I can.”
Last season was tumultuous for Buehler, who played with both the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies. After being released by Boston, he joined the Phillies in August 2024. Despite struggles with Boston, he displayed promising performance with Philadelphia, catching the eye of the Padres and other teams. “I threw the ball well over there,” Buehler noted, highlighting his focus on regaining velocity and improving his delivery.
Buehler’s impressive track record includes two All-Star selections and two World Series championships during his decade with the Dodgers. Notably, he excelled against the Padres, boasting a 7-1 record with a 1.67 ERA in 13 starts. His last impactful appearance for the Dodgers came in the 2024 World Series, where he secured a save in Game 5 against the New York Yankees.
After missing the entirety of the 2023 season and significant time in 2024 due to recovery from a second Tommy John surgery, Buehler’s move to the Padres signals a fresh start in the NL West. “A good opportunity to be a part of a really talented ballclub,” he remarked, indicating his eagerness to contribute.
The Padres have been actively reshaping their roster, with Buehler vying for one of two remaining spots in the starting rotation against a competitive field, including Joe Musgrove and Nick Pivetta. General manager A.J. Preller has also signed notable players like Nick Castellanos and Griffin Canning recently, enhancing the team’s postseason ambitions after a successful run last year.
As Buehler settles into his new role, he is determined to prove himself. He mentioned relocating to the West Coast during the offseason to prepare for his comeback, stating, “I got my body in a little better spot.” With his delivery returning to form, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as he gears up for the upcoming season.
