BREAKING: A new art initiative at Grinnell Hall Senior Center in Beloit is urgently connecting senior citizens with veterans, culminating in a significant fundraiser for disabled and homeless veterans. The project, which focuses on diamond art—a colorful craft involving the placement of resin pieces on canvas—will feature specially designed pieces that honor the various branches of the U.S. military.
Instructors Marion and Jack Graham unveiled this creative venture, emphasizing that the finished artwork will be available for sale on September 11, 2023, coinciding with Veterans’ Day. A total of 14 matted and framed pictures will be offered for a suggested donation of $35 each, with all proceeds directed to support local veterans through the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization.
“This project is a wonderful surprise and will directly benefit our veterans here in Rock County,” stated Kevin Manhart, treasurer and judge advocate for the DAV Rock County Chapter 14. The DAV provides essential services, including volunteer transportation for veterans needing rides to medical appointments.
The diamond art project has quickly gained popularity, expanding from just five participants in January to 15 as of now. Participants choose designs that resonate with their personal stories, such as Opal Vance, who selected a piece representing the Navy to honor her brother-in-law’s service.
“The class has become like family,” commented Jack Graham. The community spirit is palpable, and those interested in joining the class can participate without any class fees—the only requirement is a $25 membership to Grinnell Hall.
This initiative not only fosters creativity but also pays homage to the sacrifices of veterans. The history of Grinnell Hall itself is steeped in support for military service, thanks to a generous bequest from Emma Grinnell in 1937 intended for patriotic organizations.
As Grinnell Hall prepares for the upcoming sale, the urgency to support veterans grows. “We are asking for the community to come out and contribute,” Marion Graham urged, reinforcing the importance of this cause.
In a time when support for veterans is more crucial than ever, this project represents a heartfelt bridge between generations, bringing together seniors and veterans in an inspiring way.
Stay tuned for updates as the event approaches, and consider participating in this meaningful initiative to honor those who have served.
