USDA Orders States to Reverse Full SNAP Benefits Amid Crisis

URGENT UPDATE: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has ordered states to “immediately undo any steps” taken to distribute full Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to low-income Americans. This directive, issued late Saturday night, comes as the Trump administration threatens financial penalties against states that fail to comply.

The memo, obtained by CBS News, marks a significant escalation in the ongoing turmoil surrounding SNAP benefits, affecting nearly 42 million Americans reliant on these funds for groceries. The chaos has intensified following a federal judge’s recent ruling that temporarily mandated full November SNAP payments, only to be halted late Friday by Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson pending an appeals court decision.

States like Maryland are now left scrambling. Governor Wes Moore expressed frustration over the lack of clarity from the federal government, stating, “There is chaos, and it is an intentional chaos that we are seeing from this administration.” He criticized the administration for prioritizing funds for other initiatives while neglecting essential support for struggling families.

The uncertainty surrounding SNAP benefits has dire implications for many families, with the average monthly benefit for an individual nearing $300 and $1,000 for a family of four. Most recipients live below the poverty line, which is approximately $32,000 for a family of four, underscoring the urgent need for reliable food assistance.

With the delay in payments, food banks and pantries nationwide are experiencing a surge in demand. Long lines have become common as families seek free meals or drive-thru giveaways. Some states have stepped in to offer emergency funding to food banks, while others have allocated their own resources to provide direct assistance during this critical time.

As the situation develops, all eyes are on the USDA and the Trump administration for further guidance. The recent upheaval has raised questions about the future of SNAP funding, leaving millions of Americans in limbo. The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated, as families depend on these vital benefits for their daily sustenance.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds, and consider reaching out to your local representatives to voice your concerns about the stability of SNAP benefits.
