US Drops Charges Against Hernan Lopez in FIFA Bribery Case

UPDATE: In a stunning legal reversal, federal prosecutors have dropped all charges against Hernan Lopez, a former Fox employee implicated in the massive FIFA bribery scandal. This decision, announced on October 31, 2023, effectively ends a years-long legal battle surrounding the broadcasting rights for the World Cup and other major soccer events.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of New York cited the “interests of justice” as the reason for this surprising move. In a letter to U.S. District Judge Pamela Chen, who has overseen the case, U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella indicated that the charges against both Lopez and Full Play Group, the Argentine sports media rights company involved, should be dismissed.

This decision marks a significant turning point in a case that has been mired in controversy since Lopez was convicted in 2024 for paying tens of millions of dollars in bribes. His convictions included charges of money laundering, conspiracy, and wire fraud conspiracy. Full Play Group faced additional counts related to wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering concerning the World Cup and Copa America.

Earlier this year, a federal appeals court ordered the reinstatement of these convictions after Judge Chen had granted a motion for acquittal. The Biden-era Justice Department appealed that ruling, leading to today’s unexpected development.

In a related filing to the Supreme Court, the Solicitor General’s Office has argued that the dismissal of the case is warranted and requested the court to reverse the appeals court’s decision, allowing for a fresh review by a New York federal judge.

This rapid turnaround has drawn attention as it reflects shifting priorities within the Justice Department regarding high-profile corruption cases. The implications for broadcasting rights and the integrity of the sport could be profound, as the case has long been seen as central to the accountability of those involved in sports corruption.

As the dust settles, all eyes will be on how this development impacts ongoing appeals and future litigation in related cases. The decision could set significant precedents in the legal landscape surrounding sports and media rights.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story, as it continues to unfold in the coming days.
