UKGC Confirms Mandatory Deposit Limits for Online Gambling by 2026

URGENT UPDATE: The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has just announced groundbreaking measures to enhance consumer protections in online gambling, mandating mandatory deposit limits for players starting June 30, 2026. This decisive action aims to mitigate gambling-related harm, a growing concern in the UK, where approximately 1.4 million adults struggle with gambling issues.

Under the new regulations, effective immediately from October 31, 2025, all licensed online gambling operators will be required to allow customers to set deposit limits that are straightforward and hard to bypass. This initiative is a significant step in the broader reform of responsible gambling practices, responding to the urgent need for enhanced player protection in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

The UKGC’s mandate requires that every new client can set their deposit limit before making any financial commitment. Operators must present these limit-setting tools prominently on their websites, ensuring they are visible on homepage and deposit pages. Bettors will also receive bi-annual updates on their spending, further promoting financial awareness.

Helen Rhodes, director of major policy projects at the UKGC, emphasized the importance of these reforms:

“Our work will help empower consumers to have greater awareness and control over their gambling.”

This initiative comes after extensive consultations with industry stakeholders, academics, and consumer advocates, highlighting the regulator’s commitment to consumer safety.

The new deposit limit rules are designed to create consistency in how these limits are applied across the online gambling sector while allowing for additional optional limits based on losses or withdrawals. According to the UKGC, deposit limits represent one of the most effective strategies to manage player risk.

Urgent action is needed as gambling-related financial harm poses a critical issue in the UK. The UKGC estimates that 2.5% of the UK population is affected by gambling problems, with leading charity GamCare reporting record demand for its consultation services this year.

As these new regulations roll out, the UKGC is preparing for further adjustments in 2026 and beyond, ensuring that protections evolve alongside technological advancements and changing player behaviors. The introduction of these mandatory deposit limits marks a pivotal moment for responsible gambling, aiming to safeguard players and promote healthier gambling habits.
