UPDATE: The U.S. Marine Corps will celebrate its 250th birthday on November 10, 2023, with events planned to honor its rich history and significant contributions to U.S. military operations. This milestone comes just one day before Veterans Day on November 11, marking a period of reflection and gratitude for those who have served.
The Marine Corps traces its origins back to November 10, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution in Philadelphia to raise two battalions of Marines. This resolution laid the foundation for what would become a legendary fighting force, with their first significant operation being an amphibious raid into the Bahamas in March 1776 under the command of Captain Samuel Nicholas, the first commissioned officer of the Continental Marines.
Over the years, the Marine Corps has been integral in numerous conflicts, from engagements during the Revolutionary War to operations against the Barbary pirates and the War of 1812. Most notably, they participated in the defense of Washington D.C. and played a crucial role in the Battle of New Orleans alongside General Andrew Jackson.
In 1921, a pivotal change occurred when Major Edwin McClellan proposed to formally recognize the Corps’ original birthday. His memorandum to Commandant John A. Lejeune led to the establishment of November 10 as the official Marine Corps birthday, celebrated with a commemorative dinner in Washington D.C.
The motto of the Marine Corps, “Semper Fidelis” (Always Faithful), was officially adopted around 1883, symbolizing the unwavering commitment of Marines to their country. The Corps’ emblem, reflecting its history, was finalized in 1868 and features an eagle, globe, and anchor, representing the Marines’ amphibious capabilities.
The upcoming celebrations are expected to draw attention from veterans, military families, and supporters nationwide, emphasizing the enduring legacy of the U.S. Marine Corps. As they prepare for this historic birthday, the Corps continues to embody the principles of duty, honor, and sacrifice.
Stay tuned for more details on the events planned for this momentous occasion, and join in honoring the brave men and women of the Marine Corps who have fought to protect freedom and uphold the values of our nation.
