Two National Guard Members Shot Near White House, Critical Condition

UPDATE: Two members of the West Virginia National Guard have been shot near the White House in a shocking act of violence, now confirmed to be in critical condition. The incident occurred on November 22, 2023, just blocks from the presidential residence, prompting immediate concern from authorities and the public alike.

Witnesses report that the assailant, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, opened fire on the troops without warning. The shooting is being described as a targeted attack by Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, who confirmed both guards are hospitalized with severe injuries. “This was a targeted shooting,” Bowser stated during a press conference.

The FBI is investigating the incident, with Kash Patel, the FBI Director, stating that the motive remains unclear. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene, with law enforcement quickly converging on the area. Jeffrey Carroll, a D.C. police chief, indicated that video evidence shows the gunman approached and immediately began firing.

Social media footage captured the aftermath, showing first responders performing CPR on one of the injured guards while the other lay wounded on a glass-covered sidewalk. The emotional impact of the incident has resonated deeply, with local residents expressing disbelief. “It’s such a beautiful day. Who would do this?” asked Emma McDonald, a witness who sought refuge in a nearby café during the gunfire.

In response to the escalating violence, the Trump administration has ordered an additional 500 National Guard members to Washington, D.C., increasing the total presence to nearly 2,200 troops in the city. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that President Donald Trump requested the deployment, underscoring the urgent need for security in the wake of this attack.

Initial reports from West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey mistakenly indicated that the troops had died, but he later clarified that his office was receiving conflicting reports about their condition. Authorities confirmed that one suspect is in custody and was also shot, though his injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening.

As investigations continue, police have cordoned off the shooting area, with personnel from the Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on-site. A helicopter landed on the National Mall as part of the emergency response.

The shooting raises serious questions about the safety of military personnel in urban areas, particularly as they continue to assist local law enforcement amid heightened crime rates. Vice President JD Vance urged the public to pray for the injured guards, emphasizing their role as protectors of the nation. “This is a somber reminder that our soldiers are the sword and the shield of America,” Vance stated.

Next Steps: Authorities are actively pursuing leads and gathering evidence to understand the full context of the attack. Public outcry is expected as the investigation unfolds, and officials are urging anyone with information to come forward.

This incident marks a troubling escalation in violence against military personnel and underscores the ongoing debates about the deployment of troops in urban settings. As the nation reflects on this tragic event, calls for enhanced security measures and support for the National Guard are likely to intensify.
