Two Creston Players Shine with All-District Honors in Baseball

UPDATE: Two standout athletes from Creston High School have been recognized with prestigious all-district honors by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association, announced just last week. Senior Parker Varner has earned a spot on the first team as a pitcher, while sophomore Tom Mikkelsen is celebrated on the second team in the Class 3A Southwest District.

This announcement comes as a significant milestone for the Panthers, with Varner achieving an impressive 6-2 record and a 2.18 earned run average over a team-high 61 innings. During this time, he recorded 72 strikeouts while allowing just eight walks and 59 hits. Opponents managed to bat only .248 against him, highlighting his dominance on the mound. Varner also showcased his versatility by playing third base and shortstop when not pitching, leading the team with a remarkable .450 batting average and driving in 25 runs.

Mikkelsen, primarily a catcher, demonstrated his adaptability by also contributing in the outfield and as a regular pitcher. He batted .363, hitting a team-high of three home runs and recording 17 RBIs. With 17 hit-by-pitches to his name, he also posted a pitching record of 2-4 and a 2.07 ERA, allowing just 18 hits across 23.2 innings while striking out 27 batters.

The recognition is not only a personal achievement for Varner and Mikkelsen but also boosts the visibility of Creston’s baseball program. This honor reflects the hard work and dedication these young athletes have put into their season, a sentiment echoed by their coaches and the community.

The complete all-district teams were also announced, featuring several other talented players from the region. Fans and supporters are rallying around these young athletes, celebrating their accomplishments and what it means for the future of the team’s legacy.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Varner and Mikkelsen as they continue to play pivotal roles for the Panthers. Their performance not only inspires their teammates but also sets a precedent for aspiring athletes in the area.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Panthers and their journey as they strive for success in the upcoming games and beyond. This recognition is just the beginning for these talented players, and the community is eager to see where their hard work will lead them next.
