UPDATE: Mankato’s music scene is about to come alive as the highly anticipated performance series at Minnesota State University (MSU) kicks off with a stellar lineup of artists. The first act, featuring Jennifer Grimm and Joe Cruz, is scheduled for January 27 at the Halling Recital Hall. This duo is set to deliver a captivating performance, showcasing music from legendary pairings like Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass.
The excitement doesn’t stop there. On February 8, MSU will host a unique collaboration of talent with local artists David Viscoli, Daniel Rieppel, Matthew McClung, and Erick Rieppel, featuring classical pieces by renowned composers including Bela Bartok. This event promises to be a highlight for classical music enthusiasts.
Adding to the buzz, Martin Zellar, who rose to fame in the 1980s with The Gear Daddies, will take center stage on February 11 at The Venue on Madison Avenue. Zellar’s enduring presence in the music industry makes this a must-see performance for fans.
Another local favorite, Mary Jane Alm, returns to MSU on February 19, bringing her acclaimed vocals and charm alongside Richard Kriehn and others. Alm’s induction into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame highlights her impact on the music scene.
On February 21, the energy will ramp up with Electric Diva, fronted by North Mankato’s own Mollie Fischer. This high-energy performance is expected to be a nostalgic trip filled with dance-along hits.
Following that, the Luke LeBlanc Band will showcase original music on February 21, blending folk and pop styles to create an intimate atmosphere. Mark your calendars for March 21 when the Erik Koskinen Band brings soulful storytelling to the stage, merging folk, blues, and roots-rock into a mesmerizing experience.
On March 26, witness the transformative power of music with John McAndrew, who uses his platform to explore themes of recovery and healing through music therapy. This performance is especially relevant for those connected to substance abuse recovery.
The series continues with Sarah Morris & The Sometimes Guys on March 30, recognized for their poignant songwriting, echoing influences of John Prine and Norah Jones.
The excitement culminates with Dessa & Friends on April 11 at The Venue, featuring a dynamic mix of new and original music. Concluding the series on April 21, Cruzando will delight audiences with vibrant Latin music that celebrates the rich traditions of Cuban Son and Puerto Rican bomba.
In addition to these performances, MSU’s Department of Performing Arts will host a series of student ensemble concerts, showcasing the talents of the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, and more.
