Texas Camp Director Dies Heroically During Devastating Floods

KERRVILLE, Texas — In a tragic turn of events, Dick Eastland, the beloved owner and director of Camp Mystic, lost his life while attempting to save campers from the catastrophic floods that swept through Texas this past weekend. Eastland’s dedication to his campers was legendary, often described as a father figure to the young attendees who spent six weeks each summer under his care.

Eastland, a father of four, was known for his unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of his campers. His legacy includes not only the fond memories he created for thousands of children but also his continued involvement in their lives, attending weddings and other significant milestones. His selfless act during the floods was no surprise to those who knew him well.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all that his last act of kindness and sacrifice was working to save the lives of campers. He had already saved so many lives with the gift of Camp Mystic,” said Paige Sumner, a former camper and close friend of Eastland.

The Flood’s Impact

Kerr County officials have confirmed that the devastating floods, which struck on Friday, have claimed the lives of 43 people, including 15 children. The disaster has left the community in shock, with 27 girls from Camp Mystic still unaccounted for as of Saturday night. The search for these missing campers continues as rescue teams work tirelessly amidst challenging conditions.

The announcement comes as the region grapples with the aftermath of what is being called the “Fourth of July Flooding,” a natural disaster of unprecedented scale in the area. Dick Eastland’s passing has left a profound void in the community. His leadership at Camp Mystic was characterized by a deep sense of responsibility and care for every camper. His actions during the flood reflect a lifetime of putting others first, a trait that has inspired many of his former campers and colleagues.

According to sources, Eastland’s influence extended beyond the campgrounds. He was a respected figure in the community, known for his charitable work and dedication to youth development. His legacy is one of compassion, bravery, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of others.
