Tabitha Betson has made a significant impact since her return to the Colorado Buffs women’s basketball team. After spending several months in her native Australia, she checked into her first game of the season on December 14, 2023, against Miami (Ohio). The sophomore forward was eager to rejoin her teammates after being cleared to practice just a day before her debut.
Initially, Betson faced challenges as she shook off the rust, logging only seven quiet minutes during the game. However, her role has quickly evolved into a vital position within the Buffs’ rotation. Currently, Colorado holds a record of 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12, with a crucial matchup against No. 16 Baylor on the horizon.
“I definitely think that as each game has passed, I’ve felt a bit better,” Betson stated. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches, she has been instrumental in adjusting to the team’s dynamics, stating that she has learned how to play with her teammates and understand their needs. Last season, Betson averaged 5.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game in 18.0 minutes. Her absence during the summer left her feeling homesick, but she worked closely with head coach JR Payne to facilitate her return.
Payne expressed confidence in Betson’s ability to reintegrate into the team. “I think she’s doing great,” he commented. “We knew from a cerebral standpoint she would understand everything we’re doing.” His observation highlights Betson’s basketball IQ, which she has demonstrated since her return.
In her initial games back, Betson scored only three points and struggled with her shooting, going 1-for-10. Nevertheless, her performance improved dramatically in the following matches, where she averaged 7.5 points on 5-for-10 shooting. Additionally, she contributes an average of 2.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 13.8 minutes per game.
Betson acknowledged the challenge of rejoining the team after her absence. “I was a little nervous about it, coming back, considering I hadn’t been here for months,” she shared. Despite her initial hesitance, she found her teammates welcoming. “Everyone’s just been so excited to play with me,” she added.
A vocal presence on the court, Betson was encouraged by Payne to assert herself within the team. “You kind of have to prove yourself a little bit,” she noted. “I feel like everyone’s been super receptive of me.” She understands that consistent performance in practice is essential to earning the trust and respect of her teammates.
Payne remarked that upon her return, Betson retained her skills. “She could shoot, make good decisions in ball screens, and communicate her way through things,” he stated. Her growing comfort level is expected to lead to greater contributions as the Buffs progress through the Big 12 schedule.
Looking ahead, the Buffs face a tough challenge against Baylor, a team that currently has a record of 13-3 and also stands at 2-1 in the Big 12. Payne acknowledged the need for focus and execution in their upcoming match. “If we can really lock into doing our job and executing the game plan against Baylor, it’s going to be a great matchup,” he emphasized.
The upcoming game is set for Thursday at 18:00 MT at Foster Pavilion in Waco, Texas. Colorado will attempt to improve upon their current road performance, having struggled with an 0-2 record away from home this season. In contrast, Baylor boasts an impressive 8-1 record at home.
As the Buffs prepare for this critical matchup, key players to watch include C Jade Crook and F Anaelle Dutat, both of whom have been pivotal to the team’s performance. Dutat currently ranks third in the Big 12 with an average of 8.4 rebounds per game and leads in offensive rebounds with 3.7 per game.
In their quest for victory, the Buffs must overcome challenging statistics, including a history of 64 consecutive conference road game losses against Associated Press Top 25 opponents since a win at Baylor on January 7, 2004.
With a renewed sense of purpose and the return of Betson, the Colorado Buffs are poised to make a statement in the coming games.
