BREAKING: St. Bonaventure head coach Mark Schmidt is set to retire after the current season, according to sources reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel earlier today. The Bonnies are scheduled to play their final regular-season game this Saturday, after which they will head to the Atlantic 10 tournament next week.
At just 63 years old, Schmidt has led St. Bonaventure for an impressive 19 seasons, marking a significant era in the program’s history. Under his leadership, the Bonnies made three NCAA tournament appearances and secured two Atlantic 10 regular-season titles. Schmidt’s accomplishments earned him the title of Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year twice, in 2016 and 2021.
In a memorable highlight, Schmidt guided the Bonnies to win their last 12 games of the regular season in 2018, earning an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, where they advanced past UCLA before falling to Florida in the first round. His overall record at St. Bonaventure stands at 339-253, making him the all-time winningest coach in the program’s history.
Before joining St. Bonaventure in 2007, Schmidt coached at Robert Morris for six seasons, where he totaled 82 wins and 90 losses. He has also served as an assistant at noted programs like Xavier, Loyola (Maryland), and Penn State.
In a significant move for the program’s future, St. Bonaventure appointed former ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski as the general manager last season. Wojnarowski is expected to play a key role in the search for Schmidt’s successor.
Fans and alumni are now left to reflect on Schmidt’s remarkable legacy and the impact he has had on countless players and the community in Olean, New York. As this story develops, all eyes will be on St. Bonaventure as they prepare for a new chapter without their long-time coach.
Stay tuned for updates on Schmidt’s retirement and the upcoming Atlantic 10 tournament.
