Snorkel AI Cuts 13% of Workforce Amid Strategic Shift

URGENT UPDATE: Snorkel AI, a leading AI training startup valued at $1.3 billion, has just laid off 31 employees, representing 13% of its workforce. The layoffs, confirmed to Business Insider on July 12, 2023, primarily impacted software engineers, while positions focused on artificial intelligence remained largely intact.

This significant workforce reduction comes as Snorkel AI shifts its strategic focus towards its “data-as-a-service” business model, leading to the “deprioritization of some legacy areas” within the company. In an official statement, Snorkel AI expressed gratitude for the contributions of those impacted and assured that they are providing support during this transition.

The company, which has established partnerships with major players like Google and Anthropic, raised $100 million in a Series D funding round just this past May. However, the recent layoffs signal a critical pivot for Snorkel AI as it navigates the evolving landscape of AI training and data management.

In a competitive market for data labeling services, Snorkel AI’s cuts mirror similar downsizing across the sector. Notably, Scale AI, a prominent competitor, laid off 14% of its workforce in July, citing overhiring and market pressures. These shifts reflect the growing challenges within the AI industry as demand for human expertise continues to rise amidst a backdrop of operational cutbacks.

Among those laid off from Snorkel AI were senior roles, including the global head of business development and the director of AI solutions engineering. Despite these changes, the company retained the majority of its talent in applied AI and research, indicating a targeted approach to its workforce restructuring.

As Snorkel AI adapts to its new focus, the implications of these layoffs resonate not only within the company but across the broader AI ecosystem. The demand for efficient data labeling and training solutions remains high, and Snorkel AI aims to concentrate its resources on areas that promise the greatest impact for its clients.

With this latest development, industry observers are keenly watching Snorkel AI’s next steps and how the company plans to leverage its remaining talent to navigate the competitive landscape. Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds.
