California’s U.S. Senators, Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla, visited the California City Detention Facility on March 12, 2024, as concerns grow regarding the treatment of detainees within U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities. Their tour comes in response to reports highlighting inadequate living conditions amid heightened immigration enforcement operations, which have increased the number of individuals in federal custody to over 70,000 nationwide.
During their visit, Senator Schiff remarked, “When you walk inside these walls, you experience a different trauma.” He emphasized the need to understand the realities faced by those apprehended by ICE. Senator Padilla raised similar concerns about the facility’s environment, stating, “What are the conditions like? They look a lot more like a prison than a dormitory style setting.” He noted that detainees are classified based on ICE’s assessment of their risk level.
Many detainees shared troubling experiences with the senators, including being apprehended while attending mandated immigration appointments. Senator Schiff noted, “Many of them that we spoke with were picked up at their immigration appointments, so they were doing what they were supposed to do, to become citizens or establish a lawful presence.”
Concerns Raised by California Officials
The visit follows a letter sent by California Attorney General Rob Bonta to the Department of Homeland Security, detailing alarming conditions at the facility. Bonta’s letter highlighted issues such as inadequate medical care, insufficient clothing and blankets for warmth, and unsanitary living conditions. These reports are central to a federal lawsuit filed in November 2023 by seven detainees, who allege that the conditions violate basic standards of humane treatment.
Senator Padilla remarked on the increasing need for attention to the welfare of detainees, stating, “If the administration is true to their word, the population here is only going to grow. So the need to address nutrition, medical attention, mental health care, all the above is only going to grow.”
As of now, the Justice Department and ICE have not responded to requests for comments regarding the senators’ visit or the allegations concerning conditions at the California City facility. The situation continues to unfold as advocates push for reforms and improvements in the treatment of detainees across the nation.
