San Diego State University (SDSU) announced that several key players will return for the 2026 football season, providing a boost to the team amidst a wave of player departures. Notable among the returning athletes is wide receiver and kick returner Jordan Napier, who made his intentions clear via a social media post featuring the team slogan “Finish the climb” along with “We ain’t done yet.”
Napier, a rising junior from Fontana, was a standout performer for the Aztecs last season. He recorded 48 receptions for 629 yards and two touchdowns before suffering a season-ending knee injury on November 15 against Boise State. The injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season, but he underwent surgery in late December and is optimistic about returning in time for the start of the upcoming season.
Other Key Returnees and Departures
In addition to Napier, SDSU will retain two other potential starters: edge rusher Brady Nassar and tight end Jackson Ford, both of whom confirmed their returns on social media. Starting tackle Joe Borjon also reiterated his commitment to the program after evaluating his options following the departure of offensive line coach Mike Schmidt, who left for Kansas State. Borjon’s decision came after discussions with new offensive line coach Bill O’Boyle.
Despite these positive announcements, the Aztecs faced significant losses as several players entered the transfer portal. Backup cornerback Isaiah Buxton was the latest to announce his departure on Saturday via X. Other notable defensive players leaving include edges Trey White and Ryan Henderson, linebacker Owen Chambliss, and safeties Dalesean Staley and Dwayne McDougle.
White is reportedly considering a move to Texas Tech, where he could receive a lucrative deal exceeding $1.5 million. Meanwhile, Staley and McDougle are expected to visit Nebraska, where SDSU’s defensive coordinator Rob Aurich was appointed last month. The current roster changes reflect a critical period for the Aztecs as they prepare for the upcoming season.
The fluctuation in the roster highlights the ongoing challenges within collegiate football, especially with the increasing reliance on the transfer portal. As SDSU gears up for the new season, the return of key players like Napier, Nassar, and Ford will be crucial in maintaining competitive momentum.
With the 2026 season approaching, the Aztecs will need to capitalize on their returning talent while addressing the gaps left by departing players. The team’s ability to adapt and rebuild will be pivotal as they strive for success in the coming year.
