UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown on October 29, 2023, Scott Wedgewood delivered a stellar performance, making 22 saves for his first shutout as the Colorado Avalanche triumphed over the Chicago Blackhawks with a score of 1-0. This victory marks the Avalanche’s ninth consecutive win, solidifying their dominance as the NHL’s top team.
The game took place in Chicago, where Cale Makar scored the decisive goal late in the second period, propelling Colorado to an impressive 16-1-5 record. The Avalanche have now secured points in 13 straight games (11-0-2), following their only regulation loss against Boston on October 25.
Wedgewood’s exceptional performance comes just one night after Mackenzie Blackwood recorded a shutout against Nashville, showcasing Colorado’s defensive prowess with two shutouts in as many nights. Wedgewood, who has risen to prominence this season, leads the NHL with 13 wins and boasts a league-best 2.23 goals-against average.
Meanwhile, the Blackhawks struggled to maintain momentum, suffering their third consecutive defeat after a six-game point streak. Spencer Knight made 24 saves but couldn’t secure the win for Chicago.
The match began with the Blackhawks dominating the scoreless first period, outshooting Colorado 11-2 and testing Wedgewood repeatedly. His most critical save came against Ryan Green, who was left open in front of the net.
However, the Avalanche turned the tide in the second period, launching an offensive onslaught and outshooting Chicago 19-1. Makar’s goal, scored with just 1:39 left in the period, was set up by Tristen Nielsen, who notched his first NHL point by assisting on the play.
As the game progressed into the third period, the Blackhawks ramped up their pressure, but Wedgewood’s quick reflexes held strong, including a crucial stop on Frank Nazar with under a minute left as Knight was pulled for an extra attacker.
Looking ahead, the Avalanche will host the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday, while the Blackhawks are set to face off against the Minnesota Wild on the same day. With their current form, all eyes will be on Colorado as they aim to extend their remarkable winning streak.
This latest victory not only highlights Wedgewood’s emergence as a key player but also reinforces the Avalanche’s status as serious contenders in the NHL.
