The Saginaw Community Foundation has opened applications for its Community Improvement Initiative Grant, offering up to $40,000 for a single project designed to enhance lasting physical improvements in Saginaw County. Applications must be submitted by May 1, 2026, with the grant recipient set to be announced in July 2026. Projects funded by this grant are expected to be completed by July 2027.
This year marks the 14th iteration of the CII grant program, during which the foundation has introduced significant alterations to its requirements. As detailed in a news release dated February 2, 2026, the focus for 2026 is now specifically on projects that create permanent physical assets, rather than broader community initiatives.
New Focus for Grant Applications
Reneé Johnston, president and CEO of the Saginaw Community Foundation, emphasized the importance of these changes in her statement: “As we prepared for our 14th year of the CII grant process, we have modified the CII definition and scope. The new definition states that projects must create an enduring, measurable impact in the community, be supported and planned by a broad range of users, and have a clearly defined plan for success and sustainability.”
Eligible projects now include a variety of permanent physical assets. Previous successful projects have featured park revitalization with playground equipment, trails, and pavilions, as well as the development of youth centers and fitness parks. These initiatives aim to provide lasting benefits to the community.
Prioritizing Diversity and Inclusion
While the grant is open to any application that addresses community needs through permanent physical assets, priority will be given to projects that emphasize diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, or justice. The foundation seeks to use the grant as a means of proactively enhancing community assets and encouraging local organizations and their partners to implement improvement initiatives.
For those interested in applying, further details regarding the grant and the application process can be found on the foundation’s website at saginawfoundation.org/cii. Established in 1984, the Saginaw Community Foundation has been dedicated to connecting donor interests with community needs and opportunities, serving the residents of Saginaw County for nearly four decades.
