Rutgers Coach Greg Schiano Eyes Major Changes After 56-10 Loss

UPDATE: Rutgers’ head coach Greg Schiano hinted at potential changes following a devastating 56-10 loss to the No. 8 Oregon Ducks earlier today. The Scarlet Knights, now 3-4 and 0-4 in the Big Ten, surrendered an astonishing 750 total yards, marking one of the worst defensive performances this season.

The loss highlighted the struggles of Rutgers’ defense, which had already been ranked 97th nationally in total defense against FBS opponents, allowing 418.4 yards per game. The Ducks dominated the field, racking up 446 yards in just the first half, and the Scarlet Knights were unable to recover until the fourth quarter when Oregon’s coach Dan Lanning began substituting players.

In the aftermath, Schiano stated, “I’ve got to take a hard look at everything, everyone.” His remarks underscore the urgency of the situation as the team faces the prospect of missing the postseason for the first time in three years. Schiano acknowledged the need for introspection, saying, “I got to look at everything. It starts by looking at me because I’m the leader and I didn’t get it done tonight.”

The defensive struggles have raised concerns about the future of defensive coordinator Robb Smith, who is under scrutiny as the team prepares for a crucial matchup against Purdue next Saturday. Smith’s tenure has seen the Scarlet Knights concede at least 346 yards in each of their first six games against FBS opponents.

Schiano’s comments reflect a critical moment for the program. “You are what your record says you are,” he remarked, emphasizing the harsh reality of their current standing. The loss to Oregon not only shattered expectations but also leaves Rutgers on the verge of clinching a 13th consecutive season without a winning conference record.

With just five games remaining, the pressure is mounting for Schiano and his staff to make decisive changes. “We’re going to go after it this week,” he declared. “Only those that show me that that’s truly what they’re doing will get the chance to go coach or play.”

As the team regroups, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely for any shifts in strategy or personnel in the coming days. The Scarlet Knights must address their deficiencies swiftly if they hope to turn their season around and avoid further humiliation.
