Rockets’ Udoka Slams Officiating After Overtime Loss to Nuggets

URGENT UPDATE: Houston Rockets coach Ime Udoka has launched a scathing criticism of the officiating following his team’s narrow 128-125 overtime loss to the Denver Nuggets on December 4, 2023. Udoka called the game “the most poorly officiated game I’ve seen in a long time,” highlighting a series of controversial calls that left fans and players buzzing.

The tightly contested matchup saw both teams combine for a staggering 59 free throw attempts, with key players like Denver’s Nikola Jokic and Jonas Valanciunas fouling out. The pivotal moment came with just 2.3 seconds left in regulation when an off-ball foul was called against Houston’s Amen Thompson, allowing Jamal Murray to tie the game with a free throw.

“Just in general, I think it was the most poorly officiated game I’ve seen in a long time,” Udoka stated post-game. He specifically criticized officials Natalie Sago and Jamahl Ralls, claiming they “have no business being out there,” while suggesting crew chief Zach Zarba appeared “starstruck.” The Rockets challenged the foul, but the call stood, igniting further frustration.

The final minutes of regulation were a rollercoaster, with four ties and four lead changes in the last 1:40. In overtime, the Nuggets surged to a 124-117 lead after a three-pointer from Spencer Jones, but the Rockets fought back, closing the gap to just three points with 13 seconds remaining. However, a critical miss from Alperen Sengun on a contested three sealed the Rockets’ fate.

“It’s a physical game,” Murray remarked, addressing the officiating. “It’s tough for the refs to call both sides, like, dead even. I think they missed some calls on our end, and they missed some calls on their end, so I don’t really think that was an issue tonight.” Murray finished the game with a stellar 35 points, including going 14-of-15 at the free-throw line.

Jokic led the Nuggets with a jaw-dropping 39 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists, marking his NBA-leading 12th triple-double. Sengun, on the other hand, notched his first triple-double of the season for the Rockets with 33 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds. Despite the loss, Houston’s Kevin Durant added 25 points along with impressive all-around contributions.

This defeat marks the Rockets’ third consecutive road loss and further complicates their standing in the league. Meanwhile, the Nuggets, already missing two starters in Aaron Gordon (hamstring) and Christian Braun (ankle), also lost starting guard Peyton Watson to a right trunk contusion early in the game. The victory propels Denver to sole possession of second place in the Western Conference with a record of 19-6, now just 4.5 games behind the Oklahoma City Thunder for the top seed.

Fans and analysts will be watching closely as the Rockets regroup from this emotional loss and prepare for their next challenge. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
