Ottawa Partners with Cohere to Accelerate AI in Public Services

BREAKING: The Canadian federal government has just announced a groundbreaking partnership with AI company Cohere to enhance public service operations through artificial intelligence. This collaboration aims to identify critical areas where AI can significantly improve the efficiency, security, and speed of federal services.

During a meeting on June 15, 2025, Prime Minister Mark Carney and AI Minister Evan Solomon confirmed the agreement with Aidan Gomez, CEO of the Toronto-based tech firm. The deal marks an urgent step towards leveraging advanced generative AI technologies to modernize how public services operate.

“Our focus is clear: we want to deploy Cohere’s AI tools to deliver faster and smarter services to Canadians,” said Sofia Ouslis, spokesperson for Minister Solomon. The federal government is prioritizing this initiative, indicating a swift movement towards real-world applications of AI.

While details on financial commitments remain undisclosed, the government emphasized that the partnership does not include a “financial component.” Nevertheless, Cohere expressed optimism in their recent blog post, stating their goal is to “transform the public sector with our secure, sovereign AI technology.” They believe that accelerating AI adoption will yield substantial productivity gains and modernize operations across various government departments.

The agreement also aims to bolster Canada’s commercial capabilities in AI, but specific strategies for this expansion have yet to be revealed. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Carney’s campaign promise to harness AI, coinciding with efforts to streamline spending across government agencies, with cuts of up to 15 percent being requested from most departments.

Ouslis highlighted the government’s commitment to exploring how AI can improve operations, saying, “AI has the potential to significantly enhance government services for Canadians.” Ottawa is not just looking to improve its services; it is also dedicated to fostering a vibrant technology sector within Canada.

As this partnership unfolds, all eyes are on how quickly and effectively AI can be integrated into public services. The potential impact could reshape the way Canadians interact with their government, making services more accessible and efficient than ever before.

Stay tuned for updates as this developing story progresses and watch for further announcements regarding specific AI projects in the public sector. This collaboration could indeed set a precedent for future technological advancements in government operations.
