Nick Kurtz Wins AL Rookie of the Year in Unanimous Vote

BREAKING: In a stunning announcement, the Oakland Athletics’ first baseman Nick Kurtz has been named the American League Rookie of the Year, receiving unanimous recognition from all 30 voters. This prestigious honor was confirmed by the league on the evening of October 16, 2025.

Kurtz, just 22 years old, dazzled fans and analysts alike with an impressive season, boasting a .290 batting average, 36 home runs, and 86 RBIs. His 1.002 OPS ranked third across Major League Baseball, trailing only the celebrated Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani. Remarkably, Kurtz accomplished this despite being called up in late April, which meant he did not qualify for the batting title.

His standout performance came on July 25 against the Houston Astros, where he made history by hitting four home runs in a single game, marking him as just the 20th player ever to achieve this feat. Additionally, he showcased his power again later in the season with another two-home run game against the same team.

Kurtz led all rookies in home runs and RBIs, and ranked second in on-base percentage while finishing third in hits. He outperformed his teammate Jacob Wilson, who garnered 23 second-place votes, and Roman Anthony of the Boston Red Sox, who placed third in the voting.

In total, 12 other American League players received votes, including Noah Cameron of the Kansas City Royals and Colson Montgomery of the Chicago White Sox, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. This accomplishment not only highlights Kurtz’s talent but also signifies his essential role in the Athletics’ lineup.

As a result of winning this award, under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement rules, Kurtz will receive a full year of service time. However, the Athletics will not gain an extra draft pick, as he was not on the major league roster for at least 172 days.

This significant milestone for Kurtz not only marks a personal achievement but also serves as a beacon of hope for Athletics fans, who are eager to see their young star continue to shine on the national stage. As the season concludes, all eyes will be on Kurtz as he prepares for what promises to be a thrilling 2026 season.

Stay tuned for more updates as the fallout from the MLB awards continues to unfold!
