UPDATE: Newark Parish Church has welcomed worshippers for the first time in over a year, marking a significant milestone in its history. On December 21, 2025, the historic church rang its bells, inviting the community back after closing in November 2024 for extensive restoration as part of the ambitious Reawakening of St Mary Magdalene project.
Hundreds of parishioners flooded into the Grade-II listed church throughout the day, eager to participate in the revival of their cherished space. The reopening included a traditional Choral Eucharist at 9 AM, followed by a Contemporary Christmas Celebration for families at 11 AM, featuring live music and captivating performances. The evening concluded with the beloved Festival of Nine Lessons and carol singing, filling the pews with festive spirit.
Rev. Danny Marshall, who led the day’s services, expressed his joy:
“It was an absolute joy and delight to gather in St Mary Magdalene again. After almost 13 months, it was wonderful to see so many people.”
He emphasized the gratitude felt for the funding and the dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the church could reopen in time for Christmas celebrations.
The church is set to continue its festive offerings with traditional services including Christingle and Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, along with a Christmas Day communion service. Church leaders announced that Newark Parish Church will fully reopen to the public in mid-January, with new information boards being installed later that month. Guided tours and regular events are also on the horizon, promising an engaging experience for the community.
Andrew Fearn, church warden and Reawakening Project lead, spoke about the day’s success:
“It was a tremendous day, full of joy. It was really gratifying to see so many people come out, for all different reasons, whether it was Christmas, curiosity, or something else.”
Fearn noted that the project is about more than just the building itself, stating:
“This isn’t the end, this is the start.”
This reopening is a pivotal moment for Newark, emphasizing the church’s role as a central hub for community connection and spiritual growth. As services continue and the church evolves, the excitement within the parish resonates strongly, promising a bright future ahead.
