New Orleans’ Palace Café Closes After 34 Years of Service

One of New Orleans’ most beloved dining establishments, the Palace Café, has announced its permanent closure after 34 years of operation. Located on Canal Street in the heart of the French Quarter, the restaurant’s abrupt exit from the culinary scene has left both locals and visitors in shock. The closure, effective from July 7, 2023, is attributed to a contentious lease dispute, as revealed in a heartfelt statement shared on the restaurant’s social media.

Since opening in 1991, the Palace Café has been a staple for those seeking an authentic New Orleans experience. Renowned for its signature dishes such as Turtle Soup, Crabmeat Cheesecake, and the classic Bananas Foster, the café has played a significant role in the city’s rich culinary landscape. The restaurant is part of the Dickie Brennan & Co. group, which operates several other prominent venues, including Dickie Brennan’s Steakhouse and Bourbon House.

The unexpected announcement prompted a wave of nostalgia and sadness as many shared their fond memories of the café. The post confirmed that the closure was not a voluntary decision. A recent court ruling regarding the restaurant’s 35-year lease was cited as a key factor preventing continued operations at its 605 Canal location.

Despite this setback, the management at the Palace Café remains hopeful. They have indicated plans to appeal the court’s decision, expressing a commitment to preserving the restaurant’s legacy. “We’re not ready to say Palace Café is gone forever. Should the right opportunity arise, we will welcome it with open arms,” the statement read.

Fortunately for fans of the establishment, the restaurant group operates a sister venue across the street that will continue to serve its patrons. This includes the six other restaurants under the Dickie Brennan & Co. umbrella, which remain unaffected by the lease issues surrounding the Palace Café.

The sudden closure is part of a troubling trend impacting the restaurant industry, particularly in New Orleans, where many establishments have struggled to maintain viability in recent years. The loss of the Palace Café marks yet another chapter in the evolving story of the city’s dining scene, which continues to grapple with challenges posed by economic and legal hurdles.

As New Orleans moves forward, the community’s resilience remains evident, with many hoping that iconic venues like the Palace Café can find a way to thrive once more.
