Health officials in Alabama are sounding the alarm as a new strain of influenza has led to a significant increase in flu cases throughout the state. The Alabama Department of Public Health reported that nearly 11% of patients visiting local emergency rooms presented with viral respiratory symptoms, marking a 47% rise compared to the previous week. Alarmingly, close to 10% of these patients tested positive for influenza.
The predominant strain identified is influenza A H3N2, often referred to as “Super K.” This variant differs from the strain included in this year’s flu vaccinations, raising concerns among health experts. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Alabama currently ranks very high for influenza-like illnesses.
Tragically, the latest flu season has resulted in the deaths of at least two children. Jace Watkins, an 11-year-old from Hueytown, and Noah Smother, a 14-year-old from Pisgah, both succumbed to complications arising from the illness. Reports indicate that both children had been in good health prior to contracting the virus.
Precautionary Measures Encouraged by Health Officials
With students returning to school amid this rising flu activity, health officials are urging parents and guardians to remain vigilant. They recommend several precautionary measures to help curb the spread of the virus. These include:
– Regular handwashing and maintaining cleanliness of surfaces.
– Staying home and minimizing contact with others if feeling unwell.
– Enhancing indoor ventilation where possible.
– Wearing masks or facial coverings in crowded or high-risk environments.
As the flu season progresses, it is crucial for residents to monitor symptoms and take appropriate actions to protect themselves and the community. The rapid increase in flu cases serves as a reminder of the importance of public health measures, especially during the school year.
Parents are encouraged to keep children informed about hygiene practices and to seek medical attention if symptoms arise. Health officials are committed to providing ongoing updates regarding the situation as more data becomes available.
