UPDATE: A highly anticipated book titled “Swedesburg/Bridgeport … Histories, Stories and Photographs” is set to be released in March 2026, shedding light on the intertwined histories of these two communities in Upper Merion Township. Author Jack Coll aims to honor both towns, with a special nod to Swedesburg, fulfilling a promise to his late friend and local historian Ed Dybicz.
Coll, who has previously authored two books on Bridgeport, emphasizes that this new release will go into greater detail than before, presenting over 500 pages of documented history, anecdotes, and photographs. The book showcases the strong community bonds that define Swedesburg and Bridgeport, detailing everything from the influx of Polish immigrants in the late 19th century to the evolution of Sacred Heart Church.
Among the book’s highlights is a chapter on the legendary aviator Charles Lindbergh, revealing that the undercarriage of his iconic aircraft, The Spirit of St. Louis, was assembled at the former Summerill Tubing Company in Bridgeport. This facility, now home to Arnold’s Office Furniture, played a crucial role in crafting the plane’s framework, a testament to the area’s rich industrial history.
Coll doesn’t shy away from the darker aspects of Bridgeport’s past either. He recounts the events of October 3, 1934, labeled by Coll as “The Most Violent Day in Bridgeport’s History”, during a union strike at James Lees & Sons Textile Company. This chapter details the tragic death of local resident Ellwood Quirk amidst violent clashes, highlighting the community’s resilience in the face of adversity.
The book features a variety of chapters, covering topics such as local businesses, emergency services, and educational institutions.
