Nevada Commission Upholds $100K Fine, 15-Year Ban for Trainer

UPDATE: The Nevada Gaming Commission has just upheld the toughest penalties in a doping case involving trainer Ricardo Castillo Jr., confirming a $100,000 fine and a staggering 15-year ban from holding a racing license. This decision, announced earlier today, effectively ends Castillo’s hopes to return to the sport for over a decade.

The penalties stem from four of Castillo’s horses — Famous Prizes, Dr. B, BnB Hasta La Luna, and BnB Lightning McQueen — testing positive for illegal substances, including methamphetamine and amphetamine, following races at the Elko County Fairgrounds during the 2024 Labor Day weekend. All four horses had collectively earned $17,700 in prize money before the doping tests were conducted.

Initially, the Nevada Gaming Control Board imposed a $1,000 fine and a one-year suspension per offense, but Castillo contested the decision. The board escalated the case to the Gaming Commission, which convened a hearing in Las Vegas where Castillo, alongside his attorney Jennifer Gaynor, argued for reduced penalties.

Despite Castillo’s plea that the fines were excessively harsh compared to previous cases, including shorter bans and lower fines for similar offenses, the commission stood firm. Board member Abbi Silver highlighted the serious safety risks posed by drugged horses, emphasizing that the integrity of the races and betting was paramount.

“This punishment is necessary to prevent future incidents and ensure the safety of all involved,” stated Commission Chair Jennifer Togliatti. She cautioned that the outcome could have been significantly worse had an accident occurred due to the doping.

Castillo expressed regret, stating that coaching had always been his passion and he never intended to harm any horses. However, with the Commission’s ruling now final, he faces a long absence from the sport and a fine that he admits will be challenging to pay.

This decision has immediate implications for horse racing integrity and will likely spark discussions about doping regulations within the industry. Stakeholders will be watching closely as the fallout from this ruling unfolds.

As this story develops, it raises critical questions about the enforcement of doping regulations in sports. The Nevada Gaming Commission’s firm stance signals a potential shift towards stricter oversight, making it clear that violations will not be tolerated.
