In a bold move, Schur confirmed that Bell’s cameos will continue regardless of her awareness. During Season 2, Episode 8, titled “Final Exams,” viewers get a clear glimpse of Bell as her character from Veronica Mars plays on a television screen, watched by characters Julie (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) and Vanessa (Constance Marie) in their living room. This is a significant upgrade from her subtle role in Season 1, where she appeared briefly with her back to the camera.
According to Schur, the plan to include Bell came after a brief cameo in Season 1, where she stood up and walked off set. “We decided that somehow or another, as long as this show exists, she will make an appearance in every season,” Schur explained. Ted Danson, who co-starred with Bell in The Good Place, added that her appearances will remain “unpaid,” keeping the tradition light-hearted.
It’s been five years since The Good Place concluded its four-season run, which earned an impressive 13 Emmy nominations. While Bell is busy with her own Netflix series, Schur confirmed that she was aware she’d be featured in the current season but had no idea how. “I told her she’s in this season, but she doesn’t know how because I didn’t tell her,” Schur revealed.
Fans are buzzing about these cameos and the multiple Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the series. One notable nod includes Winnie Holzman portraying a moral philosophy professor, referencing Chidi Anagonye, played by William Jackson Harper in The Good Place. “There are a lot of little hat tips and nods that we put into the show in the last two seasons,” Schur stated.
