UPDATE: A sergeant with the Massachusetts Department of Correction, Aaron Gill, tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident on Route 117 in Lancaster on August 7, 2023. The incident occurred when the 50-year-old rider failed to navigate a curve, resulting in fatal injuries.
Authorities report that Gill was riding westbound when the crash happened near Crawford Truck Sales. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but the injuries were so severe that life-saving measures were unsuccessful, as confirmed by the town’s public safety department.
Gill, a dedicated corrections officer for 27 years, was known for his service and deeply rooted community connections. Born on August 21, 1974, in Burlington, Vermont, he was just weeks away from his 51st birthday at the time of his passing. His obituary highlights his commitment to helping others, including volunteering in the recovery efforts after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Described as a loving father, brother, and friend, Gill had a profound impact on those around him. Colleagues share heartfelt tributes, with Stephen Hocking stating, “I could always count on Aaron for his friendship and support.” Gill was also a talented bagpiper, performing with the Irish American Police Officers Association Pipes & Drums and contributing to memorials honoring fallen officers.
In addition to his dedication to public service, Gill was passionate about genealogy and New England history. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle through the region, which was a source of joy and adventure for him. He was a founding member and past president of the Hired Guns Motorcycle Club of Massachusetts, where he fostered strong friendships and community bonds.
A memorial gathering is planned for August 15 at Russell & Pica Funeral Home in West Bridgewater from 3 PM to 7 PM. A memorial service will follow on August 16 at 10 AM at the same location. Family and friends remember Gill for his humor and unwavering support.
To honor his legacy, those wishing to contribute can donate to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, which provides mortgage-free homes to families of fallen first responders. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by those in service and the importance of community support during difficult times.
