URGENT UPDATE: Volunteers at People’s Place are making an immediate impact this holiday season by bringing joy and essential support to over 2,300 children in Ulster County. As families rush to prepare for the festivities, these dedicated individuals are working tirelessly to ensure that the spirit of giving reaches every corner of the community.
Located in Kingston, NY, People’s Place has ramped up its efforts throughout December, executing several initiatives like Project Santa and Bag Holiday Hunger. Executive Director Christine Hein revealed in a recent interview that the organization has seen an enormous increase in volunteer hours, particularly around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
“We received an overwhelming response from volunteers this year,” Hein stated. “With the holidays, our reliance on volunteers increased to nearly 97% to deliver our special services.”
The Project Santa initiative provides gifts, including toys, board games, and winter clothing, to children aged newborn to 16. This year, more than 2,300 children benefited from the program, showcasing the community’s commitment to supporting its youth.
Meanwhile, the Bag Holiday Hunger program served 900 households, providing essential food items to families with children from pre-K to 18 years old. “These bags offer breakfast, lunch, and snacks to help families during the school break,” Hein explained.
The response from the community has been heartwarming. “Many families express their gratitude, with comments like, ‘You’ve made my child have a happy Christmas,’” Hein shared. This emotional engagement highlights the human impact of their work, as volunteers and recipients alike share in the joy of the season.
To bolster these efforts, volunteers from local organizations, including the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and the Kingston Kiwanis Club, have joined forces with People’s Place. Their collaboration has been vital in ensuring that families in need receive the support they deserve during the holidays.
Hein emphasizes the importance of volunteering year-round, stating, “While generosity peaks during November and December, the need continues well into the new year. People are still struggling in January, February, and March.”
